En 1935-1936, García Lorca está profundamente involucrado en la vida teatral: elige con sumo cuidado a las actrices con quienes planea trabajar, colabora en el montaje de varias piezas que ha terminado, y se propone escribir, concluir o estrenar muchas más. Durante ese periodo se halla en plena ebullición: quiere llevar al teatro «dramas de tipo humano y social», «temas horribles», «problemas que la gente tiene miedo de abordar» e «incluso comedia corriente de los tiempos actuales». Este libro rastrea los múltiples proyectos teatrales que baraja entonces Lorca y explora su relación con siete actrices que influyen significativamente en la concepción de los textos y en su puesta en escena: Margarita Xirgu, Carmen Díaz, Catalina Bárcena, Helena Cortesina, María Fernanda Ladrón de Guevara, Celia Gámez y Encarnación López Júlvez. El libro incluye una singular entrevista de 1949 a Margarita Xirgu —la más extensa de las concedidas en su vida y de muy difícil acceso hasta ahora—, que abarca toda su carrera profesional y permite entender por qué su nombre está tan estrechamente vinculado al de Lorca.
